Comparing Ice Cream To Gelato: What Are the Differences?

Are you looking for a nice cold, sweet, delicious dessert? If so, you might be thinking about going out for some ice cream. As you walk down the street, you might see that some creameries are selling gelato instead. While some people might think they taste similar, there are some notable differences between the two.

The Ingredients in Ice Cream and Gelato Are a Bit Different

One of the first differences you might notice is in the ingredients. Both ice cream and gelato contain cream, milk, and sugar; however, there are a few differences as well. For example, gelato is usually made using more milk and less cream when compared to ice cream. In addition, gelato does not use any egg yolk, but egg yolk is a common ingredient in ice cream.

In addition, gelato generally contains less fat than ice cream. Because there is less fat in gelato, the flavors in gelato are usually a bit more intense. You might also notice that gelato is denser and creamier than ice cream because gelato does not contain as much air.

Gelato Is a Bit Warmer Than Ice Cream

If you try gelato and ice cream at the same time, you may also notice that gelato is a bit warmer than ice cream. Ice cream is generally served at a temperature between 5 and 10 degrees F. In contrast, Italian gelato is served at a temperature between 10 and 20 degrees F. Because gelato is a bit warmer, it makes the flavors easier to taste. You might also notice that gelato is usually served with a spade instead of a scooper. That is because gelato is easier to scoop, as it is served at a warmer temperature.
